Curriculum (2)
let's scintillate......
Clinical rotations alternate monthly between St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospital. A routine working day
usually starts at 8:00 AM. Under the supervision of the Chief Technologist and/or the Nuclear Medicine
Physicist, camera quality control is evaluated. Under the supervision of a faculty physician, the resident
reviews the daily schedule and each patient's history on the electronic medical record database system.  If an
ordered procedure is not most appropriate, the referring physician is contacted. The radiopharmaceutical
dose is then prescribed for the patient. Once image acquisition has been completed, scans are reviewed. If
additional views are needed, the technologist is notified. Scans are reviewed and interpreted with the faculty,
usually in the early afternoon, and then dictated by the residents. All dictations are review and finalized by
the faculty Nuclear Medicine physician. Referring physicians are contacted for reports with a positive
finding.

Other rotations include radiopharmacy, body imaging, radiation biology and safety, bone density, and
PET/CT. A 1-2 week external rotation in Pediatric Nuclear Medicine is scheduled during the second year of
Nuclear Medicine residency. Residents are on call every other week 24/7, but take calls from home. Image
viewing software is provided so that scans, transmitted via the Internet, can be reviewed on home PC
computers. All such studies are interpreted in consultation with the on-call faculty Nuclear Medicine
physician.  In accordance with ACGME guidelines, the total working hours for residents, including call is not
allowed to exceed 80 working hours per week.
